20 Years With a Herniated Disc: How David Avoided Surgery in Six Weeks

Living with a herniated disc for two decades and being told surgery is the only option left. And finding out that wasn’t true.

David had lived for more than 20 years with a herniated disc between L5 and S1, in the lower lumbar spine. Over time, different specialists had presented surgery as the only real solution. When he arrived at Clínica Capón, he came with more than two decades of pain behind him and little expectation that anything could change at this point.

After six weeks of treatment, the situation is different. In his own words: “I’m feeling really well. It’s honestly hard to believe the change until you live it. It’s surprising to wake up in the morning without pain and find that everyday movements that always used to bother me no longer hurt.”

A 20-year-old hernia is not a lost cause

How long a herniated disc has been present creates a very widespread idea: that the more years it has been there, the less room there is to treat it without surgery. That’s not necessarily true. What determines the prognosis isn’t just how long the hernia has existed, but whether the disc and the affected nerve root still retain the capacity to respond to treatment — something that can only be assessed through a real examination, not assumed from the years elapsed.

In David’s case, the previous diagnosis pointed to surgery. The protocol at Clínica Capón, led by Antonio, first aimed to exhaust the conservative route with advanced technology before taking that step.

Why six weeks made the difference

MBST Therapy works by regenerating the damaged disc tissue, rather than simply controlling pain the way anti-inflammatories or injections do. Combined with manual physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise to stabilise the lumbar area, the goal isn’t just to relieve the symptom but to treat the cause: the degenerated disc itself.

The fact that a two-decade-old hernia responded within six weeks isn’t the norm in every case — each hernia and each patient are different — but it does confirm that “many years with the problem” doesn’t automatically mean “no alternative to surgery”.

Do you have a long-standing herniated disc?

If surgery has been presented to you as the only option and you’ve had the problem for years, it’s worth getting an assessment before taking that step. At Clínica Capón we analyse your specific case — we don’t treat it as generic “herniated disc”, but according to your real situation.
